Della Zona

Della Zona is a business that is set to sustain our local community and provide exceptional dining by offering local grown organic foods such as, vegetables, pasteurized meats, eggs, and farmstead cheeses. The village bakery was the first one of the two businesses that opened up in the space that Della Zona is currently in. In 2007, Della Zona then opened up and The Village Bakery moved into a new space right next door. Della Zona was opened to offer a different atmosphere that the village bakery didn’t offer. Local meats, vegetables, dairy products, and their special marinara source are their foundation for sustainability. “Sustainable means something different form different areas” as said by Christine. This meaning that when they get their products from different locally grown famers.
Della Zona is place where anyone is welcomed and no one is denied, a local place for everyone can eat, that is also affordable and nutritious at the same time. The atmosphere is a real laid back place with photos and pictures on the walls from the local farms and organizations that they apart of. Even though Della Zona just opened in the fall of 2007, they have set goals to keep there establishment one of a kind in Athens. Della Zona wants to raise the demand for normal food for all, and wants to connect themselves with the community while normalizing organic foods for people to learn more about. The mozzarella that they use is from snowville creamery which is also a local sustainable establishment right here in Athens, also they get their pepperoni from shoes orchard which is made form grass feed and without the nitrex chemical that can make it a hazard to ones health. Lastly, the chicken and bacon that Della Zona gets is from the farmers market which is just another one of the local business from the around the Athens area. While there are many goals that Bob and Christine have set before their businesses there are certain to be many setbacks from starting a new business as well. Finances are the biggest obstacle the business has to overcome because of the way that the economy is starting to cut back on a lot of things, which is in turn making people across the United States cut back on things that they really can do without. When talking about finances in the restaurant business and specifically in a sustainably restaurant, things are going to tend to be a bit more expensive, but in the long run your either going to have to pay that deficit back with the bad health that those commercial foods might give to you, or your going to live a bit longer and have a longer and more healthier life. So, in the short run you may think think that it is too much to put forward, but you’re going to benefit in the long run. Della Zona try’s to do as much as they can in the community to help out people’s awareness of natural whole foods. A couple different programs that they are involved in are the “Green plate club”, which is done throughout the Athens city schools, the purpose of this program is to start to bring the slow food movement to Athens and make people aware of the healthy side effects of it as well. Another program that they have significant ties to is the “Rural Action” program which is to preserve watersheds and help in area wide clean- ups around the community. They also donate gist certificates to business around the Athens community for helping out in these various activities too.
Della Zona is headed in the right direction as fair as slow foods are concerned, they are doing all they can do for this community to try to make people aware of the good things that can come out of whole and natural foods. They aren’t necessarily trying to persuade them to make a change or to change how their eating but simply just giving them the information that they need to know, so there is no confusion to what is going on in the slow food movement towards Athens. Bob and Christine have done a great job in building their business up to be one of Athens finest, they’re not necessarily trying to expand and make chain of similar restaurants but have more of an interest in just helping others out, who are also trying to open a business similar to theirs.

Pollan

I want to start first off by saying how much i enjoyed this reading. It kept my attention throughout the whole reading, which is hard to do. After the reading i think i still have my same views as i did when i went into the reading, Micheal Pollan just expanded my views and beliefs on vegatarians and omnivors a bit further. I have not one problem with those who dont eat meat, or on the other hand, those that only eat meat. Where the problem comes into place is when those same people start to push their views and beliefs on another person. I believe you can eat what you want to eat and no one should be able to tell you other wise because in all actuality many of the same people that are vegatarians or omnivors are really trying to hive their helping hand intop the enviroment to make this a better eco- friendly place which is what were all trying to do when it comes down to it.

Plastic Water (Revision)

Imagine large amounts of aqua blue water that goes on for miles and miles. The type of pretty blue water that you imagine yourself going to vacation in: to sail, to deep-sea fish, to scuba dive while observing all the beautiful tropical fish that gracefully swim around. Now picture that post-card-like scenery, with the world’s largest dump right in the center of it.
There is a large area of the central Pacific Ocean that no one ever visits and barley anyone passes through (Moore). The Eastern Garbage Patch, also named the Pacific Trash Vortex is that area in the Pacific Ocean in which there are tons and tons of debris. This patch is over ten million square miles, which is about the size of Africa (Moore). This rubbish patch floats within the North Pacific and it has an enormously high amount of plastic and other debris trapped within the currents. There are circular winds that produce circular ocean currents which spiral into a center where there is a slight down- welling of water almost as if it were a hurricane. Anything that floats no matter which part of the ocean it comes from ends up here, possibly after drifting for years and years. A lot of this debris is eventually broken down by microorganisms into carbon dioxide and water (Moore). We, as human beings, have created a product that is nearly impossible to be deteriorated. These are plastics. Most of the debris in this garbage patch happens to be plastic bottles, plastic bags, fishnets, clothing, lighters, and other man-made items. Plastics are now almost everywhere in our society. We drink out of them, we eat off of them, we sit on them, we package things in them, and more importantly, plastic is affordable for everyone (Kostigan). But believe it or not, they are one of the most harmful products to our environment.
Why is plastic so harmful to our environment? Think about it, if all this plastic in this “garbage patch” does not biodegrade or deteriorate, where does it go? It photo- degrades - a process in which it is broken down by sunlight into smaller and smaller pieces, all of which are still plastic polymers, eventually becoming individual molecules of plastic, still too tough for anything to digest (Moore). It is not just the indigestion that is the problem, the pieces of plastic that are floating around in the water turn into plastic polymers which are oily toxics that don’t dissolve in water and accumulate up to one million times the level of these poisons that are already floating in the water. They just might be called second- generation toxics (Moore 2002).
How can we as humans help to reduce or eliminate this negative impact plastic has put on our environment? It starts with the desire of wanting to make the world a cleaner and healthier place, and someone willing to take a stand. Starting on the west coast and over seas in other countries, cities have begun to ban the use of plastic shopping bags and have decided to use more eco-friendly products as a substitute. San Francisco and Los Angeles have taken their stand and will start the ban of plastic bags beginning July 1st, 2010, hopefully it gives customers and whom ever may shop at these given stores that extra incentive to want to change and not use plastic bags any more because stores are now giving those customers that don’t use plastic bags either a discount off of there purchase or more importantly their helping change the world into a more eco- friendly place to live.
You may not believe that a single person can change the outlook of today’s society, but in some cases this is true. For instance, if people all across the world start to change their ways and find other ways to substitute for the plastic, then its going to fall on others and that may give them the reasons they need to start to cut back on what is ruining today’s society. There are obvious reasons as to why people need to start watching how much plastic they, first off, there already banning the use of plastic bags in various parts of the world, and also the “garbage patch” is a big enough reason in itself. One problem that we may encounter is that people might know how big this issue really is. If people were more educated as to what the plastic is slowing doing to our earth, then I believe that there would be no problem in helping save the environment.
We depend on plastic way too much I believe, there are other resources that can be used as a substitute instead of plastic and have a more positive impact on today’s environment and I feel as though that’s what we should be striving for. I believe we have a foundation established with other cities already beginning to head in a positive direction. As mentioned above, Los Angeles and San Francisco have imposed a ban on plastic bags and I feel as though this is a start to a bright future for our environment as well as our nature and wildlife.

Paraphrase

Source Text-The circular winds produce circular ocean currents that spiral into a center where there is a slight down-welling. Scientists know this atmospheric phenomenon as the subtropical high, and the ocean current it creates as the north Pacific central or sub-tropical gyre.

http://www.mindfully.org/Plastic/Ocean/Pacific-Garbage-Patch27oct02.htm

Paraphrase- Around and around, as the ocean currents spiral into a circular motion as if a hurricane was forming, with everything flowing to the center of the gyre. Experts refer to this as The Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Source Text- Consisting largely of partially decomposed consumer waste such as plastic bags, bottles, fast-food wrappers and toys, the rubbish moves as a single entity because of the presence of the North Pacific Gyre. This slowly rotating vortex draws in flotsam and jetsam, 80 per cent of which is believed to have originated from land, circulating it for decades and causing major problems for marine life.

Paraphrase- A large amount of the waste that is trapped within the gyre is made up of a lot of decomposed items that we may use in our day to day activities. The slow forming hurricane like gyre moves as a whole while the currents of the ocean push it in the circular motion. As the gyre rotates, it continually traps in object that are held in the gyre for what can be decades which is cause severe harm to our marine life animals.

Plastics, like diamonds are forever

Many may think that their actions in today’s environment may not have an impact on the world as a whole. Well the latest statistics show that the littering and trash that’s being thrown is growing and growing each day. There could be some help from others as well if you see someone in the environment freely throwing trash on the ground, then it is in your right to say something to that person and if you don’t then it falls on your behalf for not helping that person and our environment out. Thousands and thousands of animals in the wildlife are being affected by the trash that every person throws on the ground daily. The one place that all that trash is going is in the Pacific Ocean. The Eastern Garbage Patch, also named the Pacific Trash Vortex is an area in the Pacific Ocean in which there are tons and tons of debris in a certain area. The patch has an enormously high amount of plastic and other debris that have been trapped by the currents of the north pacific. Studies have shown that nearly 80% of the garbage that has been collected comes from land- based sources and 20% from ships at sea(Moore 2002). The debris that makes up most of the patch is being brought in from the eats coast of Asia to the center of the patch in about a year or so. Let’s not get this confused with anything else, the problem is not that it’s a patch, that it’s the size of a continent, and its filling up with toxic waste and a six to one ratio between pounds of waste and every one plankton.

Most of the floating debris is being consumed up in the stomachs of sea turtles, black- footed albatross and other creatures of that nature. One significant reason as to why so many animals are being killed in the water is because all of the floating debris is absorbing organic pollutants from the sea water, including PCB’s, DDT, and PAHs. Along with the toxic affects, when ingested, most are mistaken by the endocrine system as estradrol causing the animal to have hormone disruption (Moore 2002). These tiny plastic pellets have been found to accumulate up to a million times the level of these poisons that are floating in the water itself. These are not like heavy metal poisons that affect the animal that ingests them directly, they just might be called second- generation toxic (Moore 2002).
We can find plastic anywhere now a days in our society. We use plastic for all types of things such as, cups because we drink out of them; we eat off of them, there just so durable and cheap and made for anything. But these all of these useful things that we come to find out about plastic are the same exact reasons why their harmful to our environment (Moore 2002). Plastic, that’s all there is, so much plastic that it might be there forever. The plastic goes through a process called photo-degrade. The plastic is broken down by the sunlight into smaller and tinier pieces, many of them still have polymers which then make the plastic into individual molecules of plastic and too tough to digest. There has been much talk and chit chat about going on a nationwide ban of plastic bottles all together. I feel as if we did that, then we would be on our way to reducing the size of the mass that’s in the Pacific Ocean. Having a nationwide ban would eliminate a lot of things but also bring forward some issues that we will need to handle. We depend on plastic way too much I believe, there are other resources that can be used as a substitute instead of plastic and have a more positive impact on today’s environment and I feel as though that’s what we should be striving for.

cradle to cradle

In the essay od McDonough and Braungart they began their essay by explaining how books are being made and how books can be recycable because the paper is being made from trees but the text that is made out of ink is not. The ink is very toxic and has dioxins in which is very hazerdous and are cancer- causing.
Then they began to compare and contrast the reality of a cherry tree and how it decomposes while giving nourishment to insects, plants and also the soil.
They also start to talk about how we as humans need to be more eco- friendly and the fact that the growth of nature is characterized as healthy and beutiful while those living in urban types of enviroments are cancer.

George Monbiot

George a well- rounded man who has many different views and thoughts through his many different outlooks. A journalist, columist, author, academic, and enviromental activist. He is one that believes there needs to be a drastic change along with strong political views in order for us to capture the climate change problems that we ar e now faced with. He believes that there are many other things that we can do ourselves to help reduce the risk of climate change including: buliding regulations with german passivhaus standerds, having patio heaters, garden floodlights just to name a few. This just isn't something that everyone has to start dealing with themselves but more importantly its a change in ourselves too. Monbiot, a very decorated author as well as columist. He has published many pieces of work including his most recent published work, Heat: How to stop the planet burning.

How much do you really care?

When it comes to having a connection with nature and the environment, I believe every single person in the world has something to do with our environment. Whether it’s being an environmentalist or just doing what you can do yourself to keep the environment a clean place. Everyone has a hand in the way we want our environment to be. For me personally, I would consider myself to have an average relationship with nature. I don’t recycle, I don’t go on area- wide clean up’s, but there is a lot of good that I bring to nature as well. I do have a hybrid car, I’m not up during the early morning hours of fall trying to find the biggest buck I can get my hands on, and I do leave food outside for some animals. The main idea is to have whatever that relationship you have with nature and keep it as strong as possible. Because every little thing that you do for nature will only make things better on ourselves. We will no longer have such polluted air, the environment outside will live healthier and the plants and trees outside will grow greener and greener.

As of lately, there have been countless campaigns set up to make the earth a healthier place to live. Every day I make a routine walk through the baker center, I hear woman with their high and squeaky voices and the men’s deep masculine voices call out for volunteers to help assist them in various activities. I think I am one of many to say that they ignore many of the campaigns and signs that various organizations put up in attempt to make the environment a better place. We tend to think that our little help as individuals can’t do much to help out the earth as a whole. Ever since we started making hybrid cars and car that have flex fuel, it has been an attempt to make the air cleaner and non- polluted. The hybrid cars and flex fuel cars has catapulted a campaign for “going green”. “Going green”, is something that I think a lot of people has taken special interest in, because I believe that everyone wants to have a cleaner and more natural way of living and if they have say in what is going on and giving a helping hand wherever it may be then we will be on our way to a more natural and safer way of living.

Education and your upbringing play vital roles in the way one feels about the environment. Ever since I was just a toddlers and learning how to walk I played some kind of sport. I started playing tee- ball at the age of four. I only remember the brightest of days and a young athlete, it was the early Saturday and Sunday mornings that we drove down the run- down streets of west Columbus where I started to encounter some of the in and outs of the environment and nature. I was never a kid to sit in the outfield of a baseball diamond and pick daisies and draw pictures with their finger in the infield dirt. Through these experiments and that I went through as a youngster there was always a constant in my life. Through your mom, dad, aunts, uncles, and even grandparents, everyone has been brought up a certain way and taught to believe in the same things as our parents. And with all those morals and values you have to consider the biosphere, wild habitat and the preservation as crucial elements to living a safe and healthy life. As a family you must stay together though the hardest of times and also be able to be understanding of each one’s morals and values. I was brought to believe that every person has different interest and different views about how each feels and what they think their role is in the environment. Some of the most popular slogans you see every where you go, “going green”, recycling, even commercials that say the same thing on TV, and even charity’s by celebrity’s, rap stars, professional athletes and more.

It’s not how much money you have, it’s not what kind of car do you drive, it’s not whose house is bigger, none of that matters, it’s how much do you really care about our environment, biosphere, and wild habitat. Some say the ones that have the nicest of cars, houses, and have the most money could care less about how things are going on outside of themselves. And I agree, because if you really cared about how things where in the atmosphere you would try and cut back on the things that are hurting everything around us. Such as, invest in a hybrid car, start recycling more, start eating healthier and even try organic. These are all the things I believe we have an impact on. These are the things that we can control our self to do. And these are all things that will get done in order for us to live more natural and safer living while keeping things greener and greener.

My place

You know what they say? There’s no better place like home, and there’s no better place to be but at house. Well, this is place is my home away from home. Everything that I try in accomplish while playing football must go through this very place.
Nearly 25 hours of my time a week is spent doing something I absolutely love to do and out of those 25 hours, half of them is spent at my home away from home. Whether it is to get bigger, stronger, faster or to even just to get your head where it needs to be. Hours and hours a day is spent in this one place where the hard work and the will to win is born. If no work goes into this one place, then there is no chance of being successful in the sport of football.
Wither there only being guaranteed 12 games in the fall season, it gives you that extra incentive to want to push yourself in the off season to be the best you can be and that desire to win starts at this very place. Many other university programs call this home along with the football team, to a certain point it is to them what it means to me. Not everyone has a place they can go to, to get away and still call that place home too.

The Fish By Elizabeth Bishop

In this poem Elizabeth describes her fishing out on the water and catching a fish that is just not a normal kind of fish.  She describes this fish as such a tremendous fish and one that she has never came across before.  It must have been an older fish that has gone through a lot and finally thinks it their time to go.  As she describes in the poem, the fish was stained and lost through age.  It had givin up without a fight, " He didnt fight, he hadn't fought at all".  The fish was slouched at the end of the fishing rod and knew their time to go.  "He hung a grunting weight, battered and venerable".  Throughout the poem she is trying t paint this picture in the reader's eye, and all the pieces were being formed as you were reading the poem and finally towards the end of the pem everything comes together and she lets the fish go!
